I have started writing a book titled, “38 Hours: Life Strategies for Happiness”. 38 hours simply being the average discretionary time each of us has in a week. I appreciate some of us, based on our life stage, has more or less than 38 hours each week (after deducting sleep, work, commuting, and household chores/groceries from 168 hours). Our time is precious gold! One simple strategy is to ask ourselves, “What is our top priority for the next hour?” 60 minutes later, upon reflection and self-assessment, many of us would respond, Argh!, I was working on my 15th priority rather than my top priority. Another strategy, looking at it from a different angle, pause once or twice in a day, and ask, “what am I doing this instance? Is it my top priority? Is this current activity resulting in positive, neutral, or negative energy?” Another simple strategy is to identify the right balance between now care and future care that is ideal for us. Some of us wish to pay off our mortgage in 10 years and forego luxuries for now, while others wish to live for today. With us living longer these days, for most, living for today is not the right balance, while foregoing experiences/luxuries may not be ideal either. And did you know, for the 3rd and final simple strategy for now, that 15 minutes of walking or exercising each day, a 6-month investment of quality time in our life, results, on average, in living 3 more years? On a separate note, a plant-based diet can increase our life span further. I will also reference, rather than repeat, the great work on this subject by others. As just a few examples, there is: (1) Flourish by Martin Seligman; (2) Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived Joyful Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans; (3) Getting Things Done by David Allen; (4) Stand Out by Dorie Clark; (5) The Art of Being by Erich Fromm; (6) Critical Thinking Therapy: For Happiness and Self-Actualization by Linda Elder; (7) The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lenning; ( 8 ) 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam; & (9) Stoic Philosophers such as Seneca, Epictetus, & Marcus Aurelius along with the 3 Greeks who established Western Philosophy: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Prior to reading Seneca’s letter on the “Shortness of Life”, from “Letters from a Stoic”, I said to myself, isn’t that the truth, I am now 68 and it feels like I was just playing street hockey at the age of 12 yesterday. Seneca’s two major themes are just the opposite of my initial inklings: we have far more time in our life than we possibly need, and we waste much of our time on things, which upon reflection, really don’t matter. I have just started building brentpeterson.ca which will have content and podcasts on a great variety of subjects. It will include very talented guests. I hope to surpass the Joe Rogan Experience. Well, we can at least dream and be a fool at the same time, can we not?
